There’s a new sick leave law effective July 1, 2015 in Massachusetts. The law will help workers by giving them sick leave, and will help employers by allowing sick employees to stay home rather than spreading their germs among co-workers and customers. For congregations, the law helps to clarify how sick time is to be accrued, and gives personnel committees a starting place for developing their own policies.
All Massachusetts employers are subject to the law and must provide sick leave, accrued at a rate of at least one hour for every thirty hours worked. If you have eleven or more employees (full-time, part-time, seasonal), the sick leave must be paid. Employers with 1-10 employees may offer unpaid leave.
